Great, I have a degree in a dead field... have heard many urban planners go into development or the private sector since that's "where the money is" At least before the economy crashed. Have also heard high end real estate is doing well since foreigners think the market is "cheap" now
Its not a dead field , its the fastest growing field , but not in this part of the Northeast. The DC , Maryland and Northern Virgina areas are where the Urban Planning jobs are , Denver , Salt Lake city , Seattle , San Diego , Houston , Toronto , anywhere where the population is exploding you'll find an Urban Planning job easily...or go to Middle East or Australia or China...

Do what I did; find a job where you can use your background in urban planning or it comes in handy but isn't a planning job. Chances are you'll find that many of your co-workers have backgrounds in architecture, planning, urban design etc but also figured that being strictly in the field would be too work intensive without gain or little pay. We get into some pretty fascinating conversations at the office as a result.

Coincidentally saw a Netflix Watch Instantly last night called URBANIZED dealing with variations on Urban Planning around the world. Pretty interesting, perhaps just a few too many talking heads.
But it really pointed out to me how far behind the times NYC is when it comes to useful innovations in City design and function. Sad really.
It's worth watching for anyone with a NWI subscription.
