Is there a reputable store which sells shoes made in those countries (none of that China crap) and under $200? I don't really like those shady looking stores that claim that they sell Italian shoes but their products are suspect. I was in Paris recently and fell in love with Minelli's (Chaussures femme, homme, enfant Minelli) and Andre shoe stores, all of their shoes are made in Europe and the prices range from $99-$250, beautiful modern styles and amazing quality, I want something like that in NYC!
NYC locations charge more than 2x what you can get in Franklin Mills. Look at some shops in Forest Hills (Austin St.) in Queens and you'll find Italian shoes from $90 to $125. In Franklin Mills, it's less than half of that.
Thanks for the tip, Franklin Mills is definitely worth checking out then on special, extended trips. And I'll look into the shops in FH. Although I did notice that some of those Austin St. shoe shops have disappeared. There was a store on the corner where Europa cafe (I think that's where it was) is and they sold a nice variety of Italian shoes, I don't know if they went out of business or moved elsewhere.

Have you checked out the Garment District? There are lots of importers there and you can kind of get a feel if they're shady or not. My mom used to buy her shoes in Brooklyn. I can't remember exactly where but I want to say Canarsie.

Thanks bellakin. I did check the garment district, and found that many of them are very seedy. Perhaps it's worth revisiting them. I would imagine that there are some shoe stores in Brighton Beach, we know how Russians love their "European" goods. Just not sure which stores specifically.

LOL...I know what you mean. I live in a very Italian neighborhood and there was an Italian shoe import store but it closed. The prices were too high. I remember the shoes my mom used to get in Brooklyn were over $100 and we're talking probably 20 years ago. And that was for casual day-to-day shoes. She bought her shoes there for my wedding and my brother's wedding too and paid almost $200 per pair but the quality and fit were worth it.
I don't mind paying $200 and purchasing less, as long as the quality, design and the fit are superb. But I'm probably in the minority. Most people prefer to pay less and to buy a lot, or pay a lot more for the brand just to say that they are wearing "the It designer" of the moment.
