So I got a small raise at my job and for the first time I may have enough money to rent a cheap studio somewhere...it won't be much but it will be my own. $800 something. Any boro near a train really.

But after browsing around it seems the vast majority of cheap studios are unfurnished...and that kind of kills my dream. I mean I only need minimal things really - a bed to sleep on, a desk to put my computer on, maybe a sofa that folds out into a bed or something...for a kitchen I would only need a mini fridge, nothing more....but I have almost no money at all for such things. Just looking at price of cheap mattresses completely discourages me. And I don't have a car, family in the area, anything to really help me get those for free. I would be faced with an empty studio with no real way of getting or affording anything inside.

So...I don't know. Does anyone have suggestions of how I can possibly resolve this...where to look, how to look...or do I keep looking for cheap furnished studios indefinitely?

Sorry for sounding like a noob. I currently roomshare, out of college, have never had to worry about furniture.

Yeah furnished studio cost more than un and where talking way more. Typically you find furnished studios in nice high rise lux places. And with a budget of $800 not gonna happen your prob looking at $3000 for one.

Grab an inexpensive futon, And a basic desk for the PC. There is no fridge at all in the place? This is your first apt, A big milestone. You can get the very basics and build from there. Congrats!

Yes, most apartments are unfurnished, and if they're furnished, as was already said, they'll cost more. Funny, didn't you have to get a bed with your current share?

Look, I know this isn't what you want to hear, and I wish you'd mentioned your age, but I'm guessing that you're not long out of school. So, really, stay with roommates. If you don't like yours, find another. But roommates ideally can be great experiences, and even if they're not...well, look, if you can only afford $800, your choice will be ultra-limited anyway, so, really don't. That's great that you got a raise, but don't rush out to blow it. Your rent will inevitably go up, and you shouldn't live at the edge of your means, especially not in this economy. Start saving, and wait until you've had another couple of raises.

Most unfurnished apts. come with a small fridge and a stove. So really all you need to get is a mattress (and there always sales!) and a small table and chair for eating and working.

Just don't go picking up mattresses or furniture off the street. One word: bedbugs.
