Amen! Stay off the streets! Don't hang out on the street in high-crime neighborhoods, dressed like a thug and eyeballing every passerby, as if you were about to jump them.

In 2011, NYPD had about 23 million contacts with the public. 36 of these incidents involved firearms discharges; 9 were killed and 19 wounded. Just about one in a million. And, of all things, most if not all were justified! "Of the nine suspects killed by police bullets, ... five were in possession of firearms, two had menaced officers with knives, another had choked a detective and another was “using his vehicle as a weapon, injuring four civilians.”"

Meanwhile, more than 1,800 NYers were shot by each other. Be guided accordingly.

Alot of the negative feelings toward the NYPD stem from the stop and frisk policy. As far as I know NYC is the only city in the U.S. with this policy. So NYPD is going to be viewed more negatively than other police departments around the country. If they're not going to cancel this policy then at the least the cops should be scrupulous when stopping people to treat them as professionally and courteously as possible. Bullying and degrading people is just going to make the situation worse. Maybe stricter guidelines for stop and frisk should be put in place to make sure of this. And maybe better leadership from the top.

In some way, shape or form, street stops are legal everywhere in the country. The policy you speak of stems from NYS law, not the City. The only real problem is how Ray Kelly's NYPD executes it. This has been law since the 70's. It was never a problem before him.

Maybe it's time for a new commissioner.

I don't disagree. Perhaps one officer in each group should be required to film each S&F. At least, when it's a group of officers routinely performing them. Might be interesting to see how courteous each side is!

Stop & Frisk is a legal policy, but the current administration (RAY KELLY) implements it illegally. You can stop and frisk someone if you believe they just committed a crime or are about to. Does anyone think 900,000 stops are due to cops believing someone committed a crime or is about to? REALLY?

And therein lies the problem..a total abuse of our civil rights and laws by those who are paid to protect them!

I understand where you're coming from. Problem is, in these high crime area's the majority of the people being stopped and frisked are dressed and look exactly like the people who are out there committing crimes. Not saying this is a valid reason to stop them but when 9/10 times a person wanted for a shooting or other crime fits a certain profile of for example: black hood, oversized yankee hat, pants hanging off their behind, etc... and u see someone that fits that description just aimlessly walking around, it does arouse suspicion. Is it profiling? Of course. If you dont want to be profiled dont fit the profile. If I dont want to be profiled as a prostitute, I will avoid dressing like one in a area known for prostitution.

So what you are saying is..because Wall St pilfered billions from the global economy, and sunk the world into a huge recession (just like the the last time they did it in 1939), we should be stopping and frisking everyone who wears a suit and tie, and going through their banks/computer records correct? After all, everyone who wears a suit and tie looks like the criminals who stole billions so this must be a great way to catch them..right?

Is it profiling? Of course. But as you said, if you dont want to be profiled dont fit the profile. If I dont want to be profiled as a prostitute, I will avoid dressing like one in a area known for prostitution.

And as soon as that policy is instituted, I will be all for the current stop & frisks. Until then, it's got to stop and Ray Kelly has to go.

That's fine too. Too bad these guys are protected by our own federal govt.
