Honestly it really never stopped. I think this is a good thing for Harlem residents of every class...access to fresh foods and a diversity of food options, although more expensive, is better than limited/no access. I would like to see more of such amenities come to the nabe.
Food shopping is pretty bad in Harlem, and it's not a class thing because I find comparable(heck poorer in some cases) areas in other parts of the city are better for food shopping.

Whole Foods is not more expensive. Indeed, it is cheaper than Fairway and the dump market that is already here, "Best Yet," when you compare items. The "365" items are among the best buys I have seen anywhere, and the quality is usually very good.
Whole Foods does carry more expensive items. But even on those, they are cheaper than elsewhere for the same item.
The "whole paycheck" thing comes from people who cannot control themselves in the store.
I will pass on eating anything in Chinatown, my least favorite neighborhood in Manhattan..it is pretty dirty, stinky, and there is zero illusion of cleanliness in restaurants. I don't understand how people who are not native chinese immigrants purposely go there, and worse, eat there! Yuck!
Harlem: My statement regarding fresher foods and more expensive was in comparison to the main supermarkets there, like the C-Towns and Fine Fares.
