11' of storm surge is enough for many of the tunnels to be flooded, particularly the tunnels downtown. I don't think there's a person here to doesn't understand what storm surge means.

Don't forget that the subway is underground...Areas that aren't flooded above ground CAN and WILL flood underground. Look at the G train- it floods from Broadway to Bedford-Nostrand when it rains because the water table is so high there and the stations are deep enough to be close to the water table. In a heavy rain I've seen the tracks nearly underwater at Broadway, and this is supposed to be BEYOND a heavy rain. And those stations aren't in any zone.

Problem is we won't be getting heavy rain. 1-2 inches of rain are expected Monday. Even less on Tuesday.
We're going to be on the weak side of the storm.

NJ will bear the brunt.

They're afraid of winds + a storm surge here.

I'm asking because I have a feeling my boss is going to call me to come into work just because I live in Manhattan and everyone else lives in Jersey. But if there's no way for anyone to get into the city, I'm not going to be the only one walking in the storm to get to work.
Please take a sick day.

The Battery will be most affected. Irene brought a 9.5" tide and at worst, Sandy may bring a 10.8' surge.Anything above 10.5' will likely produce moderate flooding in some portions of the NYC subway system (those in lower Manhattan). The prediction from the NYHOPS is 9.7-10.8'.

We're all talking about NYC but it's NJ that will get killed if anything.

Bloomberg was clearly pissed at the conference and it's because he knows Cuomo and the jackasses at the MTA are playing games here and covering their ass. If anything, they could've instituted a shut down tomorrow evening if necessary. They did it today because it's easy and convenient for them.

We're looking at much more rain than that. This is a huge storm (size wise as well as in power).

This storm is lightweight compared to what they get in Florida.

I got 3 cases of beer, a bottle of whiskey, a bottle of Moscato, 3 packs of Newport 100 and mad food. Leggggooooo!!!!!! Zone A = the Rock

This is a 5 day cumulative forecast. According to that chart, we're looking at 3-4 inches max over 5 days.

Sandy is forecaste to produce 30% less rain than Irene.

They're afraid of the storm surge but I'm saying that they could have found a way to work around it. Instead they MTA is so bloated and inefficienct (as we all know already) that they don't even care to run a tight ship. They just do what's convenient ... for them (no surprise to any NYer) .

LOL! That's the attitude I like: enjoying the life or as Bloomberg would call you "selfish for not evacuating".

Red face Businesses in Westchester closed?

I just read that Pepsi's HQ in Purchase, NY will be closed on Monday 10/29. Does anyone know of any other businesses in the area that announced they are closed?
Also, the Gov of Mass annonced that he wants private busineses to close voluntarily. I guess we should just wait and see!
