For anyone who hasn't been able to work due to the storm, you should be able to collect unemployment. There is a week wait period, but you can file and collect for any days over that week. This will only work if your office is actually closed and you can't do your job from home, not because you had no way to get there.
I had the day off Monday, Tuesday I didn't go in, so Wednesday I came in, we have no internet and e mail because of verizon. My company is fine with the lateness and all in spite of the mess we are in, they don't give us employees any grief or repremanding or that crap, but, yup, there is always a but..... I am sure in a week or two, the memo will come around like it did when we had the snow days this past winter...to either give up a vacation day, make the time up or take the days pay out.
At my age, no, I am not making up squat like little school boy, I am not giving up a vacation day, I just tell the payroll lady to take the days pay out of my check and call it a day....I am not going to the poor farm any time soon.....
I could care less about the days pay.
My guess is that if they don't pay us, they'll allow use of vacation time. Fortunately, I have the days accrued. Not everyone does, though.
I would feel a bit strange about unemployment, and I'm sure if my employer saw a claim for something like this they'd be less than thrilled. Maybe the suggestion will be useful to others, though. A week without pay is a lot.
