My husband got a job at the brooklyn hospital center. We have a daughter and i stay home with her, so not a lot of money. We are from Utah so this is a HUGE change for us. Where can we live that is affordable (around $1800 a month for a 2 bedroom) safe enough I can walk around with my daughter, and not a long commute from the hospital? Does this even exist or am I in la la land. I'd give up the distance from the hospital before I gave up safety and cost. Also, should we bring a car?

consider staten island, the area around the hospital is a zoo and not a place to consider

Do check out the schools. Some of the areas are OK, but the schools might be a problem. Again, the immediate area around the hospital is terrible.

This does exist. 1800 is very realistic. Try rent.com or apartments.com or craigslist for rent by owners. It will not be the biggest apartment you have ever lived in so just accept that now and you will make your life easier. Might want to ditch the car. NY car insurance is like getting hit by Mike Tyson in his prime.
