If you can "totally afford" a $1300 a month apartment, then start looking in neighborhoods that have been recommended on this board that might (in reality) have a stock of studio or one bedroom apartments at that price range. There are plenty of threads. Some neighborhoods that have been discussed are: Pelham Parkway, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Ditmas Park, Midwood, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Bay Ridge, Inwood.

The other red flag is the use of the term Pre War to imply a grandeur that was non-existent in those photos. That is not a grand Pre War apartment overlooking the park as the ad alluded to, and that parquet tile is a dead giveaway as it is not a real wood parquet floor that would have been in a true Pre War apartment.

It could also be a representative listing that brokerages use, honing in on keywords to try to get your business, convincing you that their listing is in a hot neighborhood just waiting to be discovered and that there is no truth to the rumor that the UES ends at 96th Street.

Take a critical eye, especially on Craigslist because if it too good to be true, it probably is.

Well, if it's in Harlem, I'm not even calling, because I read enough in this forum to know that Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood are a no go.

All I care is the area, so is it doable to find an apartment (studio, even if it's very small - I live alone) for about $1300 in those nice areas?

@Henna, thanks for the areas, I will look into those, however, you did mention Inwood too - I thought that was a bad area with drugs and all of that, based on what I read in this forum.

Oh, and I did contact realtors with the same question but I believe this forum more than them, they will of course lie to get me to sign the lease.

Do not use "Best Apartments" or "Manhattan Apartments."

I did think that as well, that it could be prison adjacent. And the view may be of it, not Central Park.

Re: Inwood. Blocks west of Broadway are not the same as those to the east where there are higher incidents of crime and drug sales. The problem can be neighborhood services as the grocery options are limited, requiring a short trip to Target or the Foodtown in Broadway in Kingsbridge. You would have to trek Downtown for TJs. Whole Foods, and Fairway, though if you have a car, all are a short drive into Lower Westchester.

I can't personally vouch for all the neighborhoods I listed, although I have been to almost all of them (have not been to Bensonhurst, Bath Beach or Pelham Parkway).

The ones I listed are those I see on here as being mentioned as nice enough/decent enough places with subway access where you can get something in the $1300 range. Inwood seemed pretty nice when I visited a friend living over on Seaman Ave, not far from an A train stop. Some neighborhoods can be pretty large and perhaps have seedier parts or industrial parts that you might want to avoid. What I gave is a general guide.

Well if it isnt fake then you just lessened your chances of getting it by advertising it even further.
