Has Sandy changed your game plan in any way? Were there things you would do differently? Are there things you need?

One biggiee on my list is BUY A BATTERY POWERED TRANSISTOR RADIO. Somehow or another the ones I had have disappeared over the years, probably in the last move when I was operating on robotic control throwing out God-know's-what.

I also threw away all my candles, and will buy some more.

I think one of the fluorescent lanterns (or LED lanterns) powered by a big 6 volt battery is a good idea.

So that's my to-do list. What's yours?

(I am up high so the safest place for me would always be at home. So no evacuation EVER.)

I'm with you on the latern. We checked a few places and they were sold out. I think some sort of generator is on many people's lists but a good one is costly. I've seen Dewalt lights that have a bendable neck so the light turns upwards like a lamp and can illuminate a decent sized room. Only thing is that you need several of the back up batteries for it. I think I'd invest in that. It elimated having to use lots of candles or multiple flashlights. We had lots of candles, batteries and flashlights so we were good there but without power we lose heat in the house and hot water. I can deal without heat but not hot water. I'd definitely want to keep more charcoal for bbq'ing or maybe invest in a gas grill just for emergencies (we're coal/wood bbq'ers) and we can bbq in the garage if we had to. I'm not near water so I don't think I'd have to evacuate, which is a good thing!

NExt time I'll get some gassssssssss.

I prepared pretty well, IMO.
Had enough water, food & wine to go on for at least 2 weeks.
Now if sh*t really hits the fan next time, and the city paralizes for more than 2 weeks, it would be a big challenge for most people.

I was not badly affected. However, the storm reminded me of the importance of flood insurance. I think many think that that's automatically part of your homeowner's insurance and it is not.

Maybe you should check out something like this:

Amazon.com: Illuminator Self Powered 4-in-1 FM Radio / Alarm / 3 White focused LED flashlight / Mobile phone charger Crank Powered: Sports & Outdoors

There all sorts of hand cranking products.

Being high up is only as good as the elevator is working. If it isn't then it is kinda a nightmare.

I'm thinking of an inflatible boat and an electric motor to keep in storage.

I'd suggest a battery powered radio that also has an emergency weather radio built in. NYC/NJ were very lucky that Sandy didn't spawn tornadoes, but if they had, an emergency weather radio might have saved lives.
