South Jamaica, East NY, Brownsville, Harlem and the South Bronx are the most likely destinations for the OP as far as his job is concerned.
with 45k a year the options are limited. I would say look to pay no more than 1k/mo regardless if you end up with a roomate or not.
The car is probably gonna be an expense you won't need (or can't afford). So most likely you'll need to get rid of it.
Get back to us, when you get a solid offer and a school location.
It makes no sense to throw neighborhood names out there just for the sake of it. There are plenty of threads discussing similar (budget) situations so you might wanna do a forum search also.
That is the tough thing about this one, I could suggest places like Park Slope, but with the OP's future income, those neighborhoods would be out of the picture. Roomating in Washington Heights would make sense unless the where the job was was in a wrong area transportation wise.
It would be easier for the OP to go on Craigslist, put in $1200 for rent or roommate, see what pops up and then ask about those neighborhoods, that would at least give people a foundation. The current forum, people are just going to throw out random names. If that is what you are looking for the go to Nabewise.com and click through all the neighborhoods of NYC to get an idea of each neighborhood.

I honestly don't know why the OP is so sure he is going to get a job offer at all,let alone anywhere near a neighborhood he might want to live in.Still very little hiring going on and the fellows program guarantees nothing. Why I chose not to get too involved.
