I've been working as a PA in Pediatrics for 5 years, considering moving to NYC. I've seen a lot of different figures for starting salaries. Anybody know what the average is for someone working in Manhattan/Brooklyn? Would I be able to afford a decent 1 BR apartment by myself? Thanks!

New grad PA's in my practice (ortho) start at around 120 a year. If that helps.

thanks guys that's a lot more than what i'd read...also had a recruiter tell me 75K for new grads is the average. is that estimate of 135-175 K for all specialties or just the surgical ones? how much variation is there between manhattan and the outlying areas?

I'm not a PA but I've read they usually make at least 70K or so, which should be enough to get a 1 bdrm in the outer boroughs.

Peds MD are among the lowest payed docs, so I would expect Peds PA income to be on the lower side of PA's.

Also, NYC tends to payer lower than other areas due to oversupply of health care providers.

I'm curious where you got that info because that sure has not been my impression. I would also imagine the job market for a PA to be much better here than other places...

I'm a doctor, so I can only speak for doctor salaries. Maybe the situation is different for nurses, PA's etc.
I know if I practiced in the middle-of-nowhere-america I would get paid significantly higher, but no one wants to practice out there.

The doc is 100% right. NYC is one of the lowest paying because they know that many will take the lowball salary just because they want to live here.

I have physician friends who left NYC to places like Austin, Memphis, Dallas, and have doubled their salary.

As far as I know, many PA's make around 70k. The higher paid ones are usually in some sort of surgical specialty. No primary care PA is making 150k. And yes, general peds is considered primary care here.

This is most realistic. PA's on average do NOT make $120K plus!

Salaries do not differ much between Manhattan and the other boroughs. What mattters is your expertise, background and the hosptial and practice you find employment.

The best hospitlas, practices and doctors, will pay the best. Most of these will be found in Manhattan. Obtaining one of these 'better' jobs is where the difficulty lies.

Like most positions in NYC, you find the better opportunities right out of school through the connections you make while schooling and in training.

$70K is enough to live on your own, in the outer boroughs and the suburbs, but much less so in Manhattan.
