I might get flamed for this, but the Chinese government is right on this one.

The British accent is the way to go, IMO.
It's properly pronounced, clearer, and just sounds nicer on the ears.

wa-ta (NY) vs waw-tuh (Brit)

I prefer how the latter sounds.

British accent is classier. NY accent is funnier and tougher.

I think he should go for a deep South Carolina drawl.
A Chinaman tossing "y'all's" around while sipping mint juleps would be a hoot.
