i live on 1st Ave right across from the NYU medical center, in manhattan. they've been doin some sort of construction work now for quite a while there, but since wednesday or so some sort of alarm has gone off and it has been ringing LOUDLY up until now. obviously it must not be anything serious, since no one seems to have bothered to turn the damn thing down. i can hear it clearly in my apartment and needless to say, it's extremely annoying. it has been ringing through the nights as well.

it hasn't ceased at all over the last 3 days. who do i contact? do i just go into the hospital and tell them to deal with it? or is there some other city department i can get in touch with?

NYU is going to be closed until the summer at least, there is going to be near 24 hour construction there. I'm not sure why there is a loud alarm there though. I second the idea of calling 311.

thanks guys. i just filed a construction site noise complaint with 311. they said it goes thru the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and could take upto 10 days for them to just respond to the complaint! oh well.

I would circumvent 311 and call the local precinct directly. That's what 311 will do, but who knows when...

Also maybe walk around the area and see if you can pinpoint the source of the noise. Maybe it's from a construction trailer that someone tried to break into. You'd think that someone with the city would want to check it out. Knowing the exact source could maybe speed up the process.
