Hello All. I recently moved to the City and have been subletting in Inwood which I have been loving. Last night I visited an apartment I might move into and am interested in your thoughts on the neighborhood. It's near 134th and Amsterdam.

I am new to the city and female, but I am doing pretty well in regards to my comfort level. I've been working down on Canal Street and using the subway at all hours without any issues. I work late so may be arriving home late at night sometimes. Should I be concerned with the neighborhood? I've heard that East of Broadway things get more sketchy, but I'm not sure how true that is.

How are things compared to Inwood as far as safety and the family vibe and things like that? Any info would be appreciated!

IMO the eastern part of Inwood is no different than 134th and Amsterdam. Both rowdy drug areas. The western part of Inwood is much quieter and cleaner than both. Nice parks, kid and pet friendly.

You have that backwards. West of Broadway in both the Heights and Inwood are areas considered to be quiet, clean and nice. Avenues like St. Nicholas and Sherman are anything but clean and quiet. That said, there are really no unsafe areas in the Heights or Inwood unless you're involved in criminal activity.

134th and Amsterdam is awful.
Hard to know how quickly that will change, the Columbia building project and all.
It WILL change, but when ?
