Please, if true and you survived independantly without *help* from parents, boyfriend or random men, then it most certainly was NOT COMFORTABLE!!!
Then there is the 'gender' issue.
What it takes to be "comfortable" differs between the sexes and sexualities, as well.
I'd also like to know how a true adult hetro man can achieve traditional sexual companionship/relationship or a social life on the above income and living circumstance??
I love how these people throw around "real man" like there is a text book definition of it.
The other day I was having a debate with someone on another thread who was trying to tell me what a "real neighbor" is like. LOL, where do you people come up with this stuff?
Tradition and cultural normality!
If you choose to live outside tradition and cultural norms, that is your choice, BUT please do not attempt REDEFINITION to suit your purposes, political, sexual or otherwise.
Take metrosexual males, certainly not traditional nor culturally normal.
Cultural normality is not a thing developed of the present, but over multiple generations. Conservative in the literal, preservation of the established Status Quo.
Neighborh and neighborhoods can be defined within the same parameters of traditional cultural norms. In America, neighborhliness has been defined by the evolution of our nation, and can differ significantly from how neighborliness is effected in other cultures and countries. For example, in other countries 'tribism' is a dominant factor in how neighborliness is approached.
Well, some food for thought.
Though, if you insist upon redefining society and imposing your definition, then there is likely not much to discuss or to learn from discuss.
Note, the whole nature of tradition and cultural normality is the crux of division between Conservate and Progressive. Preservation and reinforcement of status quo vs redefinition, abandonment and disregard.
At present, I do not think there is resolution between the two divergent thoughts and views.
I think I would know considering I've been doing payroll for about 20 years now.
40K per year = $769.23 per week before taxes. (For you mathematically challenged, it's $40,000/52 weeks per year)
Claiming Single 1 dependent and NYC resident, it's $580.78 after taxes.
That's $2323.12 per month.
$2323.12
less
$900 rent
$125 cable/internet
$90 cell phone
$100 transit (this was before the monthly was increased)
$300 for food (I was cooking and taking leftovers to work)
leaves
$808.12 per month leftover or roughly $200 a week for whatever expenses.
So yes it is possible.
Now to answer the OP, yes you can live comfortably on 70K. The trick is even though you can afford 1750 in rent, ideally you will want to get a place that is more in the 1200-1400 range. Mainly because your take home will be about $3600-3700. There's plenty of options in good neighborhoods in that range in Brooklyn, Queens and New Jersey.

Haha, done
Miss J I second your argument- I also lived alone on 40k a year for a few years. It was SUPER SUPER SUPER tight for me. I had literally no leftover money per month. But my rent was also $1295. And I picked up absurd amounts of overtime, so my salary was probably closer to 47k after that. But basically, your calculations are exactly where I was at- with the $400 more in rent I had about $400 a month spending money.
IMO 70k would be ok. Especially living in Brooklyn or Queens. I would also second the argument that you look to spend around $1400 max in rent to allow for some savings.
