Not easy to tell just by judging on appearences, IMO.

I could not agree more!!! The average American needs to learn about the variety and versatility in people and cultures. Not just merely rely on and judge based on "color" and how someone "looks".

Many. As in just a few maybe? Some dark skinned people from places other than America think that an accent or custom makes them not of African descent. Many here too, go along with that silly notion, probably because American euro-centric culture has created such an undesirable impression of blackness, with the perpetration that everything wrong with it came at the hands of black people. So when people migrate to here, no matter what ethnicity, understandably, they do not care to be associated with Afro America.

I remember reading an other thread on this site, it was an african american planning a trip to DR and he was concerned if the locals would express hostility against him. The answer was (probably from Dominicans who know their country as the back of their hand) Don't worry son. The blacker you are the more embraced you are going to be on that island, Dominicans love African roots and culture.

Just something I read...

Its not just an American think its a worldwide thing. You can't see someone's culture. I was an exchange student in Paraguay and people there thought that pretty much all Americans where white. They associated blacks with Brazil, the Caribbean, or Northern South America.

And by the way, in Spanish speaking countries when people see blacks from that country, they would refer to them as negro, moreno (dark skinned), moracho (dark skinned). The words are most or less the same. How else would you described someone's appearance? And people do judge on color and how someone looks around the world.

But back to blacks, you cannot tell by looking at someone if he is African American, Haitian, Dominican, Brazilian, Nigeria, etc. All you will notice really is the color.

Hi guys, I have a fleet of passenger ships sailing in from the whitest part of Scandinavia you have ever seen and they're here to replace the blacks in the Bronx and live next to their Dominican descendants. Can you direct me towards the nearest port?

Yes. The nearest port in Valhalla. Odin and Freyja will welcome your ships with open arms!
