I'm looking for information on the ethnic breakdown of New York Congressional District 6 (Queens, includes Flushing). Specifically, I'm interested in the percentage of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese who live in this district. Does anyone know the answer to this, or how I could find it?
There's a site called socialexplorer.com. They basically take the census data directly from the government. You have to pay a fee, though, unless you use a university computer (I don't think public libraries get it for free anymore).
You can also try contacting the census bureau directly and seeing if they can help you. They have all those Summary File sheets, so maybe the info is in there.
The 2010 census didn't ask about ethnic background beyond race, so we're as in the dark as you. (The 2000 census did ask about ethnicity, but the data is very out of date, especially in a place NY-06 that has seen a lot of turnover in population.)
I would guess Chinese are the largest Asian ancestry, followed relatively closely by Koreans. Other Asian ethnicities are a much smaller portion of the population, with Filipinos as the probably the next largest. There are very few Japanese in Flushing (or anywhere on the East Coast, really).
So, out of 37% Asian, maybe 15% Chinese, 13% Korean, 4% Filipino, 5% various other Asian ethnicities.
ZIP Code 11355
6.8% Asian Indian
51.7% Chinese
6.4% Korean
etc....
