ebrehm--was 8th and 47th pretty much the same as 8th and 42nd except that there was just less people hanging around than on 42nd street? i remember that restaurant owner saying how dangerous it was at 266 W 47th but really that was more the theater district than "Times Square" or "The Deuce"

was it the same people who hung around 42 street than just happened to drift northward? was it the presence of those transient hotels and XXX places that made it bad?

kind of HK, Times Sq and edge of theater area together. back in those days everybody knew to avoid 8th Avenue, but this restauranteur spoke of being robbed and accosted in broad daylight in front of his restaurant which makes it a little tough to picture since 266 W 47th street is still mostly a business street in the theater area

You have to remember that the Westies were at the height of there power than. That was there prime operating spot. On the otherside was the garment district that was under the Gambino & Coloumbo family control, other factions were alwasy trying to move in. That area WAS a little more safer because of the money invloved, but not by much there were many truck hi-jackings & armed robbery's in broad daylight. SO add times square, combine the three & no where was really safe.

As far as places like resturant row & broadway. These areas were suffuring.when you wanted to go up or downtown you really tried to avoid these areas.
