Hi everyone. I'm heavily considering a place in the southern end of Briarwood, near the Jamaica LIRR train station, as it would allow me an easy train commute out to Long Island for work. More specifically, I'm looking west of Sutphin Blvd and anything north of the train tracks. Is this area safe? Can I walk around at night like I can in Kew gardens and Forest hills? I'm a mid twenties man and, I'm on the larger side however, I'm usually carrying a few thousand dollars in camera and/or photography equipment. What does everyone think?
Near the LIRR train station is Jamaica. A couple stops away is Briarwood, at the subway stop "Briarwood-Van Wyck Blvd". I lived here. Very safe. You are next to one of the best high schools (Archbishop Malloy). There isn't much to do/see/eat in the neighborhood but you are close to Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and it's not a bad subway ride via the E/F into Manhattan. Being close to the LIRR is great for getaways to the beach in the summer and it's nice being close to JFK if you travel. I always felt very safe there - there is an international crowd (central/easter europeans) that is family oriented. Probably the danger of crossing Queens Blvd was the only safety factor I felt there!
So, where does Briarwood end then? At Hilside avenue? I'd like to be able to walk to the train station in the morning and evening, which means living south of hilside, no? Is that technically Jamaica?
Also, I'd certainly like to live closer to Manhattan but, I really want to have a place I can afford/a place that allows me to take the LIRR to work, instead of driving. So, I don't mind gaining the easier commute in exchange for a quieter neighborhood.

Briarwood's boundaries are circled here. I lived right around the center of that area when I was there. Was around a 5-10 minute walk to the Briarwood-Van Wyck E/F train. Lots of convenient buses stop on Queens Blvd around Main Street too (Q44, Q60, etc):

It's an easy commute from Briarwood into Manhattan. Safe, quiet neighborhood. Living there and subletting our Manhattan apartment after we got married helped us to afford then buying a place.

Thank you for the image, I see it does end at Hillside.
Would you say a daily walk to the Jamaica train station was feasible from where you lived?

Indeed. I'm sure it's easy on the express train but, I'd guess that it's faster to get to Manhattan from LIC/Astoria. That was my point of comparison.

What do you mean by Jamaica train station? The LIRR? If your office is in Manhattan, why not take the subway that is right there?
If you do mean the LIRR, I would NOT walk there from where I lived. It's over a mile. But you can hop on the bus (like the Q60) on Queens Blvd which will take you to the station in a couple of minutes.
