Excellent food in that neighorhood though, definitely the best that you'll find in NJ. Very good Portuguese/Spanish food as well as Brazilian food.
My cousin and his wife live in the Brazilian section of Newark. It's fine, but really, really Portuguese. So yeah, you do feel a bit left out.

Avoid much of Jersey city. The good parts of Jersey City are also really boring. Avoid Union City, NJ.

It also depends on what you're looking for. Will you have a car? Are you looking for a house? How many people are moving with you? There are some very safe places I won't live in because they're too far away or too suburban...so that's something to keep in mind. It's not as easy as just "name the neighborhoods to avoid."

i think it has to do with maybe the club scene
and "couple of white enclaves"? lol i know you dont think thats the reason why those areas in the bronx have less murders.
try economics instead....those "white enclaves" you mention happen to be upper class neighborhoods, with the exception of woodlawn. and maybe throgs neck. the crime in the bronx is concentrated in the middle-lower class areas, as is the case with the majority of violent crime in this city.
