If I were in your shoes I would have the entire group spend a few hours in Times Square the night before. Chances are pretty good that they'll never wanna step in Times Square again. Problem solved!
A friend of mine from California came up with the idea of getting a hotel room with a view of the ball and watching it from there with a couple of friends and some champagne. The plan fell out the window, but that's the only way I would even bother with the Times Square ball drop.
I don't want to, but some of our crew do and they don't know the first thing about New York. Letting them go alone and figuring it out for themselves would just be throwing them to the wolves.
I can think of about 500 things I would rather do than go to Times Square on New Year's Eve. One of the things on that list would be sitting around watching old re-runs of Lawrence Welk. I went there New Year's Eve of '88 or '89 and it was TERRIBLE.
Thanks to all of you for your advice. Hopefully, it'll be cold and snowing and my Okie friends will just want to stay in bed.
I'm pulling out for the City in the morning. If you see a red Ford pickup with Texas plates and a Southern Baptist Disaster Relief sticker on the door, wave and say Hi! (Or, Howdy as we say down here!)
