I've known many graffiti artists who have a lot of talent and many whom just plain suck! It can be a beautiful art form but unfortunately most kids just want to tag up to make their name known. Most people equate graffiti with the Ghetto....even I do it because I know when I drive around New York or out of of New York and start to see graffiti...In my mind, I'm thinking GHETTO! Most of it's an eyesore except for the work done by talented graffiti artists.
The relevance of graffitti as some type of art movement has faded away along with hip-hop as social commentary... it's all just people clinging to the 1980's at this point. The saddest part is that there are enough 30-something ex-tagger-turned-baristas clinging desperately to the remnants of their "scene", waiting for that "big break" in the art world as a legit graff artist ... it keeps a whole generation of braindead teenagers aspiring to be "big time".
Graffitti can be art, no doubt, but so little of it is that the artistic value of the genre is almost zero... most people figured that out 20 years ago. Tagging and graffitti used to be a lot more popular, these days it is really only the domain of gangs, hoodlums, and the occasional talented loser.

all of your post is incorrect, to be honest.
graffiti is a subculture that will never ever die. things such as stencils, wheatpasting, handstyles, bombs, pieces, etc. that continue today prove you wrong.
also, if you're into graffiti to look for a big break then you're in it for the wrong reason. you honestly sound like an outsider looking in. you come off as if you don't understand.
anyway, most of us in the subculture do it for the act of doing it. the execution. most of us doing it are not gang members, teenagers or losers, period. you'd be surprised at who's doing it.
I think you are confusing something LOOKING cool, and something being art. How about we spray paint that picture of jesus over the front of your new car? Or better yet, let's spray pain the death in a canoe picture across your home and front door. Let's not forget...nobody ASKED you to put it on your car or home, but hey it's art so no permission needed. Please provide your address, and your car/license plate number so I can get those painted promptly. You clearly "understand" what this "art" truly means, so I know you will appreciate it and love in on your car/home/place of business/clothes/fence/etc.
if you don't understand things like calligraphy, print making, etc. then i don't expect you to understand graffiti and the movement.

you're trying to be funny but i honestly wouldn't mind.
*shrugs*
also, when banksy (for example) does these sort of things on businesses, some attempt to capitalize off of it...but again, ppl are speaking on what they don't know about so they wouldn't know about that.
