I used to shop there in the 90s. They had professional tools and hair color. Ricky's doesnt carry the same variety and is much more $$$. But I havent been there in yrs. Nowadays You can find everything online, incl all professional lines. And I can always find promo codes. Always cheaper. Plus I hate that area. Its like a zoo. So many tourists, Cant walk

Funny that you mentioned Ricky's. I was shocked to see Ricky's bought up a third of block on Park Row that once belonged to J & R Music/Computer World. This is just another sign that Mom/Pop stores in New York City are finding it tough to battle with online competition. Ray's Beauty Supply closes. Canal Street becomes ghost town. Is J & R demise looming near?
I hope not.
I am seeing dozens of small businesses shut their doors on the Upper East Side. Seems a new one every week.
It's good that the banks get stimulated to the tune of $85 Billion per month...notice the banks never close. <Yeah, that's sarcasm.?>
They've had limited items on their shelves for quite some time now and the staff wasn't the most attentive with their customers.
Whatever.
Yes, Ray's shelves were kind of barren the past few years. Good stuff was behind the counter and often required showing a copy of your license to purchase.
Still am sad to see "Ray" and his guys go; just another part of NYC that one remembers like Jefferson Market and so many other places pushed out.
First time went to the area wanted to take a shower when I got home! *LOL* There was a gay peep show or whatever a few doors away and everything else that part of Times Square/Hell's Kitchen was once famous for.
It sucked when all the guitar stores left 48th street.
Rudy's is still there, but Sam Ash is on 34th Street (going into big box guitar store competition v. Guitar Center). Manny's was bought out by Sam Ash, and Guitar Center is on 14th!
So disappointed, I was there just about the last day and they said they were remodeling and reopening in 6 weeks. Well, guess that's never going to happen.
