They were probably forced to live there as a result of subsidized housing or the projects.

Asian gentrifiers?

A lot of the poor chinese immigrants have no other options but to move into dangerous hoods to find a roof and raise their family. They are a lot more immune to the ghetto perps than american transsplants because they don't understand english therefore miss out all verbal insults on the streets; they are poor and down to earth therefore they are of little interest to perps either materially or physically; believe it or not, they may look unenlightened but often they are a lot more street smart than you think, and they have good instincts in spotting perps and avoiding them given that they came from harsh living conditions in their homeland. Most ghetto ppl may hate these chinese gentrifiers invading their hoods, they often do not bother to mess with them because there is so little to win from them.

This was tragic and scary how someone can push a person into the tracks in an instant. Keep your back to the wall. I hope they get this guy fast. I cannot imagine the wife's horror in having to see this.

Wow,someone who witnessed the whole thing then wound up on the same bus with the perp and knew it but was afraid to say anything until getting off the bus 1/2 an hour after the perp got off.The witness is the one who told the cops where the perp got off and then id'd the perp once they got street video.

Dad pushed in front of train as horrified wife watches | New York Post

"The straphanger witnessed the fatal push — and soon came to believe that he and Kwok’s killer were on the same bus, sources said.
The “customer recognized him and thought he was the subway pusher,” a source said. “The person was too scared [to speak up] and feared for his life, so he waited until the end of the line [before alerting the bus driver].”
By that time, up to 30 minutes had passed since the man he supected was the subway pusher had gotten off, sources said. The bus driver quickly called police, who tracked down surveillance video near where the suspect had exited the bus just a few blocks from the subway station."

I have to say that NYC surveillance camera system needs an overdue update....

Yes forced because of poverty. Either projects or living in shelters or crowded illegal apartments like the rest.
