I only go to the foreign and independent film theaters...
Lincoln Plaza Cinemas
Angelika- but lately the place seems run down. It's not clean like it used to be and the people who work there are lazy and ghetto. It used to be a nice "trendy" place but not anymore. The food is horrible and the popcorn is stale.
That said, The best one IMO is on Leffers blvd & Austin St in Kew Gardens. They play mostly award winning indie and international films.
When I used to live in KG I would go every week.
Now that I live in Astoria I go maybe once a month. Still very much worth the trip.
Well, at least it holds the (dubious) honor of being the northernmost movie theater in Manhattan. Despite the "ghetto" element they had, I miss the Nova (147th & Broadway) and the Coliseum (181st & Broadway).
I used to go to the Nova and the Coliseum when I was a kid. The Coliseum is still open but not as big as it used to be.
Someone - I think either the NYT or New York magazine - did a overview a few years ago. I know that Walter Reade was supposed to have a state-of-the-art system.
For me, the best theaters in terms of their choice of films are: Angelika
Film Forum
IFC
Lincoln Plaza
Sunshine
However, the second-best theaters, which combine well-chosen films with cheaper prices, are: Quad
Cinema Village
I respect their attempt to keep the price down, so I try to patronize them.
I've always hated the Ziegfeld, which deafens you. I've been going to the cheaper AMC matinees, but Lincoln Square is like a zoo.
