do you live in an apt? if you do, talk to your super... they know the Sanitation people... they may be able to handle it for you
Man, I remember in the 90's ppl just threw stuff on street, and that's the way to get rid of electronics, or are you one of those Earth People who strap it on some bike and off you go to some recycling center in Queens. This planet is already destroyed.
I went through this about 6 months ago. You've got to call DEP, they have a special hazmat unit that handles disposal of plumbing facilities and anything that has contacted human waste. You have to get a special permit, costs 175$. Then they come and pick it up. Don't just set it out on the curb for Sanitation, that's a ticket if their enforcement officers come around.
I'm not going to pay $175 for throwing away an old toilet. If it was me I think I might just smash the old
toilet into small pieces with a sledge hammer and separate them in small bags mix with other garbage.
Or maybe wait for the sanitation guys and "talk$" them into get rid of it for you. You can also call the
private rubbish removal company and ask for their pricing and estimates if you don't want to deal with
the sanitation guys.
You might try putting an ad on craigslist in the giveaways section. You'll probably get some interesting people who respond, but its always a good way to get rid of strange items.

Jay, reminds me of something I did long ago. I opened up an unused dumbwaiter in a brick wall to create a closet. Gave me a couple dozen bricks to get rid of. I put one in my daily garbage each day and in a month they were all gone. I felt a bit guilty but could not figure out how else to do it. <This was before the era of recycling so EVERYTHING went into the garbage.>
Take it to Brooklyn, maybe Hipsters may find a way to utlize it.
