Sometime this past year I saw a map (maybe from the NY Times) of a map that had concentric circles showing commuting times to NYC. There was a 15, 30, 45 and 60 minute circle. It was great but I can't for the life of me find it now. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
type in the address in the top bar unless you want Lower Manhattan. And probably want to select public transit. The driving time map is without traffic...

The public transit option only lets you view areas along rail lines. So it doesn't show any shading for Staten Island, or SE Brooklyn, or Nassau along Hempstead Turnpike, etc.
The Triptrop map isn't showing eastern Queens and Staten Island, but it is showing SE Brooklyn. (I don't know if it's a problem loading or what). And it doesn't show anything outside the city limits.
I'm sure there's some census data out there or something. this report maps out commute time to Lower Manhattan & Midtown by census tract (I forget the page number, but it's towards the beginning), so I assume they got their data from the census bureau. In any case, that's probably the map the OP is looking for. I also remember somebody posting a map of commute times from Queens (I think it was on Transpot Politic. I know somebody reposted it on nyctransitforums.com).
That map is great fun if a bit overoptimistic. The 10 minute inner sanctum seems to include a teleportation device to the subway platform and an always waiting train.
It takes me 8 minutes to get to the platform and within my sphere on the UES I am a lot closer than many in my neighborhood. It is rare that I can actually even be IN the subway car in 10 minutes let alone get anywhere.
I think that for most of the map, DOUBLING the stated time might be a useful idea.
(One poster on the site said it best..."Does the 10 minute circle include the use of a helicopter?"
