Can anyone provide me with a general idea of where the more unsafe areas of Sunset Park are? I'm looking at apartment listings in Brooklyn and have heard that some areas of Sunset Park are better than others, but didn't know if there was any sort of general rule as to where to look as far as less sketchy areas are concerned. Thanks!
It's tricky, you would have to go to the neighborhood itself and check out the different blocks. Check out the building you want to. The area has some okay major streets, but some of the side streets are ghetto. Sure your set on Sunset Park?

Even thou the 72 is hotter than some of the surrounding precients, the area is safe. You know that....
Definitely not set on Sunset Park, just have seen some listings in the area. One I just inquired about is at 47th St. at 4th Ave. if that gives a better idea. What sucks is that we're moving from LA in August and I'm trying to get a head start on the whole apartment hunting thing, but obviously it's difficult doing that from so far away. We have many friends and tons of family in the surrounding area who are willing to help us scope places out preliminarily and give us the low-down, but it's hard because I'm originally from NJ and while I'm pretty familiar with Manhattan, I only know the very basics on Brooklyn.

That sucks. Tell your family to scope out the block for themselves, give you there feel. See if they can get inside a building you are looking at. Try day and night. Tell them to look for loiters in and in front of your building. Sign of drug activity. Beer bottles left over, baggies. Like I said Sunset Park has okay and bad blocks. Boarded up buildings here and there. It's not rich. It's not a yuppy area. Working class to poor. It was heavily Puerto Rican and now has sizable population of Mexican immgrants, also a good number of Asians on one side. Not the worst area in Brooklyn but sketchy in parts.
Don't ever settle for less either. If you or your family feels uncomfortable in the area there are plenty more neighborhoods to choose from. Hopefully you will find a nice block that fits your needs in the city. Personally I would look elseware.

I've had no problems walking through sunset park. In fact, I've jogged through it plenty of times. It's the sorry conditions of many of the buildings that really stick out in Sunset Park!
If you want to move to Southern Brooklyn why not just go a few stops down the subway line to Bay Ridge. Bay Ridge is definitely more upscale than Sunset Park and is definitley more middle/upper-middle class.
Yeah Sunset Park is all Spanish and Chinese. If my memory serves me right, Spanish people mostly live on the western side of the park, the Chinese on the eastern side.
Sunset Park has come a long way, its not as bad and its only going to get better
