Yup you can do it. This was my first time ever visit to NYC and parked on the street on Saturday evening. I even paid at muni-meter for a few hours in the evening later I learned Saturday/Sunday is free. Well for overnight parking I asked around a few people including a cop whose car was parked just in front of me. Everyone said its okay to park for Sat or Sunday. Well we went for some walking on Sunday morning and when we came back to car around noon it has parking ticket for parking too close (ticket said 4 ft) to the fire hydrant. In my defense, I did my D/D in making sure I am not violating any law including, reading the signs and even asking a cop to whom I showed my. I couldn't find any sign anywhere which would spell out the distance from the fire hydrant. In the hindsight I could have looked over the internet, but shouldn't there be warning about it?
Since I am back to my place, I am thinking of contesting the ticket. I know I don't have any proof other than my affidavit. What is the likelihood that the fine will be pardoned or reduced given that it's also a first time offence?

Go to the web site on the back of the ticket. Follow the instructions and contest it on line. They will then offer you a slight reduction, take the deal, it's the best your going to do. As likeminas said, 4 ft. from a hydrant should have been a no brainer. I think that's way too close anywhere.

The slight reduction program ended last year. All tickets must be filed as not-guilty, or pay the full amount. No reductions are given unless at a court hearing.
That said to the OP the odds of winning in court are nearly none.

It wasn't 4 feet from the fire hydrant, that's what the ticket said. I didn't have a measuring tape to get the exact but it was more like 8-9. The cop car was parked b/w my and the fire hydrant and there was 1-2 ft distance b/w two cars.

Problem is, like other posters have mentioned, you'll never will a parking ticket case in traffic court. It would take a genuine miracle. NYPD Traffic is purely a revenue generator for the city.

Thanks. Its good to have a reality check before I dispute the ticket. For what I hear I am betting $10 more on the ticket, if the hearing is not in my favor.
