Doing great - and truly happy we made the move to the area, even though it's not for everyone. I look forward to exploring more as the weather changes, and meeting more people. We go to the library lots, and the parks on rare nice(ish) winter days. I just signed up for the Mott Haven CSA, and looking into the community garden as well.
We have been to the nicer food spots (Bruckner Bar and Grill before it closed, Ceetay, Clock Bar, etc) down on Bruckner various times...love walking up to St. Mary's Park (and recently checked out their recreation center/pool), and going to Mexicocina on Jackson.
Love the easy access to train and Manhattan, apartment itself is great, and we are very happy here!

I'm glad that you enjoy the area, for me its just to much ghetto folks. Bruckner Bar and Grill still has not reopened yet, that place is still in some legal trouble between the owner of the building, I don't think that owner wants to renew the lease for that Restaurant and its being fought out in court. I honestly can say that the area has some of the best and easiest access to Manhattan which is a stones throw away.

It takes a lot guts and thick skin to be 'happily' living in the ghetto.
Good for you !

Mott Haven and South Bronx in general are a nosedive considering the family had accomodation in Parkchester...but the family wanted to be closer to Harlem where the husband works. It's all about proximity these days!

Mott Haven may not be the most desirable neighbourhood to live in, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good life there. It's not 1979 any more. Things have changed for the better. Personally, I would have gone a little further east and lived in Longwood - it's only a few subway stops away from Mott Haven, so you're still close to Manhattan - but I'm glad the poster is happy there. The summer is definitely a lively time in the Bronx, in both good ways and bad ways. I hope everything works out for you and your family.
Since this family has just a toddler, the school system is moot. They have 5 years to save money and get into a better financial position to move to a better school district (which I recommend).
At this point it is about convenience/proximity to work, and affordability. Since this person works in Harlem, and based on their need for affordability, it is clear Mott Haven, and the Southern Bronx overall should be a viable option. So long as they understand the challenges/environment in the community.
There is far more going on in Mott Haven than people realize, and it sounds like zekedancin is plugged into alot of the good things happening in the area. If I were the op, I would also consider Melrose, Longwood (around the historic district) , and the Yankee Stadium area. I would not consider anything north of 163rd st (anything like Highbridge, Morrisania, etc).
NYur81..no need to hope that it improves...that's like saying you hope Washington Heights improves....it is already happening.

I agree with this, five years is good amount of time to save up and purchase a piece of property or move to better school district.
