Hi, everyone!

My grandfather was born and raised in Bensonhurst. He recently passed away, and I'm curious to learn more about his life in Brooklyn during that particular time. He lived there during the 1920s and 30s, I'd really excited to explore his old stomping grounds. I've heard the neighborhood has changed a lot since then.

Are there any Jewish owned and/or operated businesses still in existence from that particular era? Or any other recommendations you might have as I explore the Jewish history of the neighborhood, from the early to mid-twentieth century? The only thing I know about what he did there, was that he attended high school at I think FDR High School at 5800 20th Avenue.

Thank you so much!

I don't think FDR High School existed in the 1920's and 1930's.

Here's a little more info about the high school building at that address. Shows it was built in 1926, but I agree with BlueDog, I highly doubt it was FDR High School at that time since FDR didn't become president until 1933. Sorry I don't really know anything about that neighborhood, though.

Bensonhurst still has a large Jewish community though now it's mostly Orthodox or Russian.
The Orthodox community is centered around the Yeshiva Beis Hatalmud.
Bensonhurst used to have the center of Syrian Jewish (also Orthodox) community but that since moved East. They still have some institutions like Magen David.

here's a map that show where the Russian community is the strongest.
