It can be a PITA.

I've had knee surgery twice and ended up on crutches for a while when I first injured it. Because of my knee problems, I try to never live above the 2nd floor in a private house.

The biggest issue was the stairs to the train station, which was elevated.

I broke my ankle in 2010 - luckily I only lived on the 2nd floor of a walk-up, but it was still a challenge. I had to have surgery and was in a cast for almost 6 months!

I eventually got to be quite agile on my crutches and could get up and own the stairs very quickly (no buzzer for the front door, so I had to go downstairs to let delivery men in). The good thing was, I lost a ton of weight from all the exercise and had killer abs for several months, LOL (didn't last long - I got lazy once I didn't need the crutches any more).

Yea I guess you can kind of crawl up, but I wouldn't call the recovery time for a broken leg "quick" as it can take up to 6 months to heal! Although I would worry about the person falling down all those stairs if they can't really balance, but I guess they figure it out. I have a bad knee in addition to other sports injuries from over the years but I am able to go up and down stairs, it's just achy at the end of the day if I walk or climb a lot or overtrain and I run the risk of re injuring it from overuse, but I was wondering about the people with broken legs or ankles, because I thought there was just no way to go up and down stairs after the initial injury, but I guess people figure out how to do it with the crutches.
