It's nicer on the north side. It's not bad on the south side, but it's just not as good as the north.

The area around the 61st street 7 train stop is like the New Orleans of NYC

The south side of Sunnyside is near the cemetery, so I'm sure you wouldn't want to live there. I do agree that the area is a bit more rough-looking than the North side.

South side has the very best neighborhood, Sunnyside Gardens, absolutely lovely. If you can get something there go for it. The only drawback is a fairly long walk to the train and bus.

Sunnyside Gardens looks like it's on the north side of the neighborhood. It doesn't look like the walk is that far from the 7, though I guess that might depend what you're used to. I like the look of the houses not facing the street:

I'd imagine rentals are a bit scarce.

I always heard that sunnyside gardens don't have rentals and they are all owned so the only way in is to buy.

It isn't bad at all, just not as "desirable" as the northern portions, and somewhat depressing looking.

Still recommend it over Woodside though.

I think anywhere in Sunnyside is safe. North vs south is mostly a matter of aesthetics and money--the north side is a bit more expensive.
