Basically, in a bit less than a year the gf and I are hoping to buy a house outside of the city. A single family would be ideal. Don't need a ton of land, but some green would be nice.

So a little background on us. Both late 20s working/living in Manhattan currently. Combined income is about $210k or so (pre-tax). I only include this because this will be our first home so I don't really know what price house we can afford. So yeah, help there would also be amazing haha.

She works in Midtown east and I'm around Union Square. Because of the industries we're in, the choices for jobs outside of a city area are pretty slim and honestly not that interesting to us, hence why we're thinking we'll commute in. No kids yet, so schools aren't really an issue. I'd prefer to take the train in, and with our job locations Grand Central would be the most convenient.

She's from LI and doesn't really want to move back there, although I won't count it out 100% (though that means LIRR). I'm from CT, but the areas that are even sort of reasonable commuting-wise are way out of our budget. New Jersey doesn't get me very excited, but admittedly I think a major part of that is just not knowing any of the areas very well. Top of my list right now is somewhere in the Hudson Valley. Have spent some time in Cold Spring and love it there so would definitely consider that.

As you can tell, it's very very early stages in the search so I'm open to any thoughts, suggestions, advice, etc. My first time posting, but I've read a ton of things on this forum and the responses are usually great so hoping you all can help me out!

Thanks

Hi,

I was wondering if you made a decision? I am currently in the same boat looking to purchase a first home that is easy to commute into NYC.

Been living in JC downtown area for over 1 year and the prices for 2 bedrooms are just outrageously over priced for 700-800 square feet.

Thank you

QuestNap, what are your priorities? How long are you willing to commute? Price range?
