Well I asked my boss if I could take the day off because I had to take care of something and gave him a 4-day notice ahead of time. (It's 5 days ahead to request a personal time). So he asked me if I can get someone to switch with, which I eventually got a co-worker to cover my shift but tells me today that he can't make it because he has something last minute to do. I tried working with my boss to give me the day but he denied my request and says I have to come in. I have sick days and I wanted to just use my sick day and say I'm not "feeling good". I mean he can assume that that's a coincidence but he can't assume if I'm really "sick". My question is, can I get penalized for something like this? I'm in the local 32 BJ union by the way.

If you have Union protection you can take the sick day. If you do not, you can be fired if your boss thinks your pants are wrinkled.
