I replaced a skylight in July and it starts to leak in late December. The interest thing is if it rains, the leak will start a couple days after. The color of the water is yellowish and it drips not directly from the skylight, but the ceiling around it. Now, my ceiling have a big brown watermark.

I initially thought it is the skylight problem. But the contractor told me it is the roof. He said there might be a leak from roof and the water travels a couple days after the rain/snow. It kinds of make sense. So, I talked to roofer. But the roofer told me it is the problem from skylight. Something might be wrong from flashing. I can see it will be an ugly dispute as nobody wants to be responsible. As a city person, I really have zero knowledge about skylight nor the roof. Does anyone have a similar problem before and could help me?

Many Thanks...

My best guess: while installing the skylight, the installer damaged the roof.

But in this world, getting someone to take responsibility for his shoddy work is impossible.

Never was it more true: "If you want it done right, do it yourself."

It's probably the flashing around the skylight. Who is responsible for that? I'd think the skylight installer, but good luck.
