You can see them right out the window from the LIRR. Quite a contrast from only a few miles before in Bayside.

Here's some old photos of the UES:

Here's What The Upper East Side Looked Like In The Late 1800s: Gothamist

looks completely different, though maybe locals might be able to recognize some buildings. Looks more like Brooklyn than Manhattan today.
