My daughter and I love going to museums. She has a week off from school this month and we're deciding what to do. We've never been to the Museum of the City of New York and we're thinking about going.

Can anyone give some input on this museum? I checked out their website but not much there. Has anyone here been to that museum? Impressions of it? Opinions? Is it a large museum?

Any info is always appreciated!!

It is a small museum that isn't on the top of museums worth going to and doesn't seem to have as much as you would think it would have. If you do go, it is a suggested donation, I suggest giving a smaller donation than what is asked.

It's a modest little place. But when they have special exhibits, they can be very good. For instance, last year, they had one on the Manhattan grid system. I think that right now, they have something on tiny apartments and kids can interact with the exhibits by designing their own tiny residential units.

I like the idea of this museum more than the actual museum.

I only went once, mostly for the grid exhibit, which was interesting but seemed kind of thrown together and left me with a lot of obvious unanswered questions.

Currently their lead exhibit is about "new models for housing New Yorkers" aka microapartments, To be fair I haven't seen it but it sounds like PR for the mayor's office...disappointing.

Their special exhibits are usually very good. Also there is a good short movie about the history of NYC there that is worth watching.

The permanent huge section devoted to the maps, pictures, and chronological history of New York is FASCINATING.

They juxtaposed it with a London room but I am not sure that exhibit is still running.

It is not a large museum like the Met so paln on 90 minutes or so to take it in.

If you slide down the bannister from the second floor to the first they will escort you out of the museum. Found that out the hard way during a 7th grade field trip.

I hope you stopped in time to avoid the big knob on the bottom.

How wonderful that you do that kind of thing with your daughter, and that she enjoys it.

As everyone says, it's a small museum, so maybe you'd like to couple it with a second or third museum. And maybe the Conservatory garden, if it's not too early in the year.

thanks for all the great answers and information!

Cida, It really is great that she enjoys it. We've been going to the museums, etc since she was younger and she still loves it and asks to go. She's 14 1/2 now and I hope she'll continue enjoying it.
