We are considering renting a floor in a brownstone that comes with a pretty big backyard. The location is lovely and the apartment is wonderful too. But our main draw is the backyard, we can bigger apartments in the same area. The backyard is big and can you argue with backyard space in Manhattan? But the yard is on the north side, overlooked by other single family homes and gets no direct sunlight throughout the year.
Although we love the space, not sure if it's worth paying the premium and maintaining a space that gets no direct sunlight.
I was hoping to maintain a vegetable patch, have space for our toddler and some lawn area with seating. But no direct sun...argh!
Any experiences or thoughts to share?
North light is very pleasant, artists find it ideal. Sitting outside and reading is easier if you don't need to avoid blinding rays. It is also best for a kid's skin.
Alas, a vegetable garden is another issue. You won't get big juicy tomatoes without sunlight. But there are many plants that will thrive in bright daylight without sun.
(Are you talking about an apartment on West Ninth Street perchance?)
