All the diagrams for the Second Avenue subway stations show what they call "ancillary entrances." What do they mean by them?
Are they limited entrances like the ones without attendants and the "iron maiden" entrances? Or are these emergency entrances and exits that are of no real use to the public?

Anyone know?

I don't think the term "ancillary" ,as used here, necessarily refers to entrances. It could refer to structures such as to house venting equipment or something like that. You call them "ancillary entrances" but it doesn't actually say that. They could be ancillary structures.

That's the entrances that are not usually manned I think, A haven for the "attendants" that sell swipes and get wise if you don't give them $2.00. I hate those bastards!!

I guess I jumped to the wrong conclusion hoping selfishly that these would be be entrances but I guess bluedog is correct and they are not.
My second guess is likely the right one:

But the project will also include construction above ground — not just station entrances but also a half-dozen boxy buildings on corners along Second Avenue that the transit agency acquired through condemnation. These so-called ancillary buildings, ranging in height from five to eight stories, will house ventilation equipment. They are also intended to disperse smoke and allow for evacuation from subway tunnels in the event of an emergency.
So now I have another block walk. Cava.

Supposedly some of the existing ancillaries look like regular brownstones... except with no stairs leading to the "door". Not sure if that's true; the pictures on the MTA site only show one which has the stairs.

I've seen picture of many of these ancillaries. They all look quite modern and very little like brownstones.
