As the Asian (Chinese in this case) population rise, school will improve, neighborhood will get safer. I don't think streets will get any cleaner. I live in Bensonhurst with lots of Chinese now, more than 50% from my guesstimate. For the last 3 decades, the Italian keep selling and the Chinese keep buying. Property value keep goes up. The first generation speak little or no English, second generation speak perfect English without any ascent. Will East Harlem go the same path? I don't know. One big difference, my neighborhood has no housing project.
Not sure why this merits a piece in the Times because the same thing is happening all over the city, not just E Harlem.Three of the last 5 apartments to sell in my building in The Bronx have sold to Chinese, most of the published real estate transfers in Pelham Parkway/Morris Park involve Chinese purchasers, every time I see a moving van in the neighborhood it's Chinese people moving in and every time a new business opens up it's Chinese people behind the counter. This phenomenon seems to have accelerated in the last 2 years or so.
It's just what's happening in NYC and I think it's happening almost everywhere.
Blue Dog, Chinese are moving into Morris Park? I know it has become a spot for Albanians but didn't know Chinese were also moving in.
Definitely. Lots of them.Pelham Parkway,Pelham Gardens and Morris Park. They are opening shops on Williamsbridge just South of PP and around White Plains Rd/Boston Road just North of Pelham Parkway and even a few places on Lydig.
Seems like they like fading Italian neighborhoods.

Since you are a teacher in the Bronx, do you notice increasing number of Asian students? I'm curious about the school performance before and after the Asian invasion. People say, "follow the Asian, and find a good school". Is there any exception?
