I got a phone number with a 718 code when I moved to the area even though I wasn't sure where exactly I was gon live, I jus liked that code cuz of the hip hop sh1t, but some people asked me in NJ if I lived in NYC or someth when they see my number. I came from a place where there is only two area codes and both represent the whole area, not just the city proper so I figured it's whateva, esp if people move around this area for jobs or someth, they prolly still keep their numbers. whether they're in NJ, NY or CT.
Is it wrong to have a phone with one of the area codes of NYC if you don't live and never lived in NYC, but still live in the metro area?

Honestly, I do not give much thought, whether someone gives me a 212, 646, 718, 516, 914, 917, 347 number as cell phones and VOIP services have number portability.

I disagree in one respect - I went to great lengths to get a 212 area code for my business rather than a 646 in order to look more established. But for personal quality of life doesn't matter too much.
