This is a thread where we can discuss sidewalk food vendors in NYC. These would include hot dog carts, morning bagel and coffee carts, nuts 4 nuts, Rafiqi's, etc.

Where's the Knish?
I just want to start out with a question. When did knishes disappear from hot dog carts? I'm not a regular hot dog stand patron, but today I wanted a knish for some reason and couldn't find one. I asked at 4 carts (2 Sabrett, 2 others) and nobody had them. One guy said "Oh, been a long time no knishes, 12 years no knish." I know I've had one more recently than that. So has anyone else noticed their disappearance? Does anyone miss them?

Knish? Haven't seen them in about 3 years. My best Rafiki cart is the guy on 24th & Park Ave South. I mean, he even has a red carpet out for God's sake.

When they got replaced with the Halal stands that have taken over NY (Manhattan to be more particular).

I moved away from NYC last year, but came to visit during Christmastime. Was dragged (for the umpteenth time) to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and as soon as we left, I went right to the nearest vendor and bought a knish (everyone else got pretzels, the fools!). So, if you are ever in the area, I found one there as recent as December 2008 haha.

NOTHING beats a NYC knish, piping hot with some mustard, mmmm!

The OP is correct in asserting that Knishes aren't as abundant as they used to be.

I had a knish the last time I went to the Museum of Art too! It is annoying because most of them still have the sign and you wait in line and still can't get one. If you're downtown there is a cart behind 1 Chase Plaza that has them. Also, on Whitehall Street a couple of Italian guys have a sausage and pepper truck - they have them too.

LOVE knishes. We always used to eat them at the beach. A guy used to walk the beach selling them at Coney Island and Brighton beach.

The last time I had a knish was at a vendor on Park Ave. and 54th Street. This guy has a mobile restaurant with like 6 kinds of rice and a deep fryer. This was almost 2 yrs ago since I worked around that area so not sure if he is still there or carries knishes anymore, but I agree - nothing like a hot knish with mustard and salt/pepper!

Guys, the best halal food cart is in Queens, don't believe the hype, its not in midtown. Take the 7 to 46st-bliss, when you exit the train you can't miss it its right under the 7 in the middle of the Queens Plaza Highway. Bess chicken and rise ever. I don't know what seasonings they use, but it works.
