Im 80 percent sure I will be at BMCC for college then living in the CCNY The Tower's establishment. There is no food offered there. So where can you get cheap groceries?!? Or Farmers market type food.
Best Yet - FDB and 117th-ish. Not always so cheap but it is there.
C-Town - Amsterdam and 127 or 128th - very low end but I heard it is cheap. Met foods is just below on Amsterdam, by my standards also very low end but better than C-town. I rarely visit either store.
Fairway - directly west of you, 130th. In my opinion probably your best bet.
Any other tips for living cheap in NYC!?! I need as much as possible.
-Whatever is practical for you to buy in bulk do it. Think especially hygiene items, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc etc.
-If you are a big coffee drinker, invest in a good coffee maker and a quality thermos. Make it at home and take with you.
-Pack a lunch and take to work.
-Unlimited metro card. Get to know it well. If you can do transit chek do it.
-Let your budget dictate what you want to do for entertainment not the other way around. What I mean is if you wanna go out, don't just go out and then pay, first look at what you can do for under a certain amount and then pick. There are plenty of deals. In the summer there are tons of free events.
Try Jack's 99 Cent Store in Midtown on 32nd across from Penn Plaza. The place is HUGE, it is ridiculous! It's a good place to stock up on staples, cleaning supplies, stationary. Just be careful to look at price tags though as some things are a bit more than 99 cents. Get the online weekly circulars for Fairway Market, C-Town, Duane Reade, CVS etc. and stock up when you see nonperishables on sale. You can keep your grocery bill pretty low just by using these two strategies
I wish you had bothered to explain where you are, instead of expecting us to know what "The Tower" is. Or if you'd bothered to do a search of the forum, since it's been discussed before. There are a few cheaper markets way uptown, like the Fine Fare near east 105th and the Metropolitan near East 108th, I think. Of the larger chains, I think Associated and Pioneer are among the cheapest. Overall, I don't think Fairway is cheap at all, although I've heard that their prices vary according to location. Avoid Duane Reade and Starbucks.
Have you guys heard anything about Big Apple Meat Market or Stiles Famers Market?!? From some research I found them and everyone seems to think they're pretty good and well priced.

What do you think is a better deal that I should do, 7 day unlimited or 30 day unlimited? And I'm not quite understanding the transitchek you are referring to.
That's the name of where I'm staying it's called "The Towers" its owned by CCNY.
Cida was referring to you stating where it was located. Meaning instead of just typing The towers and thinking we all know where that is, you should have said The towers (west 130th st).
