It's not a particularly "dangerous" area but it's not what it used to be

In this decade, the Bronx is getting its tables turned. Before, the North was good and the South was the crime-infested area. Nowadays, it's the other way around. This is why I will always prefer my South Bronx over the northern areas like Co-op City or Wakefield.

The area in the South Bronx will only improve even more do to all the new developments going on in the area. The city has invested alot of money into this area of the bronx, but it seems that the Northern part of the Bronx has been neglected. So in the future what you may see is the bad pockets in the Bronx being in the Northern area " Wakefield, Eastchester, Allerton, Co-op, etc. and the good areas being farther north " Riverdale" and the South Bronx " Concourse, Melrose, Mott Haven"...

I agree with your point. The Southern part of the Bronx is becoming the place to be while the North is becoming more overshadowed by the minute.

I know in the early 90's Edenwald projects was a pretty tough spot. White Plains Rd in the 200's was the Bronx's versions of 'The 90's' section of Brooklyn, very hard working decent people of West Indian (primarily Jamaican) background mixed with some serious gangstas. Gun Hill projects calmed down alot now from back in the days. I know there is a section in Co-Op (I believe section 5) that used to see alot of gun play, don't know if thats still the case.

what are you guys talking about... the north bronx is still pretty calm over all. There aren't that many housing projects/tenements around here - you have houses and some nice ones too. However, EVERY time i go to claremont village area there is something going on for example, yesterday someone was stabbed on the elevator in webster houses....

Too many people on here hype the **** out of the South Bronx. Its gone from being a burnt a shell to poor, i really don't think its "the next best thing". I hang out in Bk the gentrifying/gentrified areas of BK are all in the shadow of Downtown manhattan, the business and cultural heart of City and some might argue the nation.
The North Bronx outside of areas of white plains roads and the edenwall houses is pretty quite. There is development going on in parts, but the area was never abandoned so its not as noticeable. The south Bronx is still full of projects, rehab clinics, and homeless shelters. Unfortunately, these seem to be creeping North with time.
PS for the record Riverdale is West of Eastchester, not further north.

This is pretty simplistic. I think the South Bronx will continue to improve, but the North Bronx will always be more attractive to some people. Sedgewick Ave. for example--enormous trees, beautiful unique architecture. You can't construct that kind of environment in a year or two. You can plant all the trees you want in the South Bronx, but they won't look like that until after we're all dead. We chose Bedford Park for the great open space, with the Botanical Gardens a couple of blocks away, tree-lined streets and the impressive greenery of Mosholu Parkway. Others will prefer a more suburban environment, like Woodlawn or Wakefield, where you can have a single family house in a well-kept area relatively affordably for the city. Others may prefer Belmont (central BX?), with that real old-New York feel, Italian bakeries, butchers, pastries and restaurants and just a couple of blocks from the zoo.
There are lots of new developments in the South Bronx, and lots of attention, and that's a good thing because it was desperately needed. But there's so much that's unique in other BX locations. I'd venture that most people in these areas would say that they don't need or want new development. Rehabilitation is welcome, but the new development I've seen tends to be of much lower quality than what is already here.
