Hello,

I know most people who live in NYC would take public transit to Manhattan especially during rush hours. I certainly do right now but due to personal and family issues I have to drive from NJ to lower Manhattan to the south Bronx during the morning commute in the near future. Does anyone have experience driving through MHT during these times? I'm looking at the West Side Highway or FDR Drive. I know, I know i'm being crazy and maybe stupid for doing this but for personal reasons I have to. Any advice would be appreciated!

What side of the Bronx do you want to be on? If you stay on the West side hwy that will put you in Riverdale. I'm guessing your gonna need the FDR.

The West Side Highway is an easier drive (IMO) than the FDR (it's wider and is basically a straight line) but the FDR has better access to the South Bronx.

I love the West Side HWY dosn't matter where i'm going. The only time i take the FDR is to go to JFK airport.

Park Avenue is the fastest way north/south in rush hour.

I will be going from Wall St. to Mott Haven. K22, I too get the impression that the West Side Hwy could be better even though it's on the West Side although i'm open to any way that is fastest. Does it get jammed up in the mornings badly? I hear FDR can get jammed up pretty badly sometimes although I don't have personal experience with this in the mornings. Aboriginie, isn't there a lot of stop and go on Park Ave?

There is always a bit of traffic on the West Side Highway near the Lincoln Tunnel, other than that, it's a smooth ride going north.

I'd recommend driving straight up 3rd Avenue into the Bronx as that goes directly to Mott Haven.

If your going to Mott Haven do not take the West side hwy. Take the FDR or as K22 says take 3rd ave.

The only problem with taking 3rd Ave into the Bronx is that the 3rd ave bridge is one way south bound only. I would suggest take the FDR or 1st avenue to the Willis Avenue Bridge which will leave you in Mott Haven by 138th st. If you continue north on Willis Ave, it will meet 3rd avenue around 149th street. I hope this is helpful.
