anybody been through or are attending the CUNY or Columbia schools of journalism? How challenging is the course load, and how much practical experience do you get?

I'm a recent grad with a BS in mass comm., and among the places I'm considering relocating to is NYC, and if so, I'm looking at local colleges and universities' journalism graduate programs--

so can anyone speak to the quality of the programs?

Isn't Columbia the # 1 school of journalism in the country ? If so I think it must have a very high quality program.

Impossible to compare the two. Columbia is in a totally different league.

By the way, Columbia is a professional school, i.e., they're looking for working journalists. If you've just gotten on the undergrad, you probably don't have enough experience to get in.

All graduate schools are "professional schools." The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is a "professional school." It means, preparation for a profession.
I would apply to Columbia but it is quite competitive for admission in that program.

In the J-School case, it means advanced studies for working professionals. It's not like law school. I've known a few people who have gone and many who have been rejected. You have to have serious experience to be considered.
