Hello everyone. I am visiting my family outside of the country during the summer and I was wondering where I can get NYC souvenirs. I know there are plenty of street vendors that I see all the time, like those in Chinatown and Little Italy, but is there a "Go To" place? Does the Met have NYC-related souvenirs? What are your recommendations for souvenir shops? I know, souvenirs seem like something that's unavoidable in NYC, but I repeat, I am looking for a "Go To" place that is well-regarded for affordable souvenirs and NYC-related or NYC metro area related gifts. Thanks in advance.
Also, I'd prefer that the place be in Manhattan, please. I'm sure that's where most of the souvenirs would be anyway due to the concentration of tourists.
There are tons of souvenir shops in and around Times Square. Start there.
For Met Musuem keepsakes start at the museum, though there was once a Met souvenir shop in Macy's (don't know if its still there). The Met opera has its own souvenir shop in the buliding at Lincoln Center.
Anywhere else, espcially in Manhattan tourist traps like Time Sq, you'll get get ripped off.
Here in Queens you can get miniature lady libertys and stuff like that for propably 1/3 of what you'd pay in Time Sq.
That is true. I'm ashamed to say that, though I've been going to NYC since I was a child, I've only gone into the outer boroughs a few times, so I am not familiar with them at all. I don't think of them as considerably dangerous at all, it's just that I'd definitely get lost.
There is a store on Lafayette as well, near Canal, where you can find many souvenir items as well. And, Chinatown merchants tend to have lower prices on souvenir apparel as well. While not NYC-themed, you may also find some unique items at Pearl River Mart on Broadway.
Times Square will have items, but at tourist prices, and you can find souvenir items in stores like Duane Reade as well, just not the depth of selection as at a souvenir-oriented gift shop.

There was a Met Museum souvenir shop next to the Midtown Manhattan Library branch and there was also I believe a Met Museum souvenir shop in the Rockefeller Center area. I don't know if those stores are still there or not.
