I'm looking to move to the kappock street area. How is street parking at night and weekends? Also, is it safe to park on the streets? i hear riverdale is a high risk area for car thefts. also, normally how long is the wait list for buildings with garages/lots?

Kappock, itself, is a challenge because of all the apartment buildings and vehicles that move only for street cleaning. There is not much turnover in parking, but Johnson offers more opportunities for parking, such that you should be able to park within a couple of blocks of your residence. As to theft, I've never known of an incident among people who had low-profile cars, i.e., vehicles not attractive for theft for parts on the secondary market or for items in the vehicle. However, a street parked vehicle will tend to show wear much faster than one that is garaged, owing to the nature of random people who use your car for bumper guides, and sometimes vandalism. Parking near a first stair street, or near the park on Johnson is not advised as it offers cover for vandals who use the stair streets for ease of access.

Some buildings have immediate availability for parking, it all depends upon the building in which you park. The Century, for example, has a huge garage, and it's usually never an issue to park there on a daily basis when I have had to do so in the Spuyten Duyvil area, so I cannot imagine there would be a huge wait for a monthly contract. You would be less than a block off Kappock on Netherland.

Riverdale ? You mean like higher than other areas of NYC or even higher than an average NYC neighborhood?
I'd love to see some stats to back that up because I don't believe it for a minute.Could be persuaded by real facts though, if you have them.

Riverdale has very low crime, but car thefts/car break-ins are indeed a problem. They are usually random and done by outsiders. The best thing to do is to pay to park the car in a garage which is what many do.
